Session #2

Louisville, KY at Bluegrass HD - June 6-9 and 14-16, 2024

Teaching the classes can be as fun as taking the classes as well as a source of extra income. Rates for instructors can vary somewhat due to experience, location and the types of course taught. Training is provided as well as continuing education opportunities, many of which are paid for.

Currently the courses taught in the state are for the MSF and Total Control curriculums. More information on each of these courses may be found at www.msf-usa.org and www.totalcontroltraining.net.

So if you think you have what it takes to be a NEW instructor in Kentucky, follow these steps:

Step 1:
Do you meet the following requirements:
  • Over the age of 18
  • Have had a valid motorcycle permit / license for the last 2 years.
  • Currently an active rider with a valid motorcycle endorsement. (Not the permit)
  • License has NOT been suspended for any reason within the past 2 years or within the past 5 years for a DUI.
  • Have taken a rider education course.
  • Can put in 7-10 days to complete the course. 100% attendance is required to pass the course.
    • Formats vary but are offered at different times as either:
      • Three (3) weekends Friday evening to Sunday.
      • One (1) full week Monday to Sunday.
      • Two (2) extended weekends Thursday to Sunday.
  • We try to vary the locations where the certification course is offered, but you may need to be able to travel to attend. Travel expenses are paid by the applicant.
  • If you can say YES to all the above then proceed to the next step.
Step 2:
  • Fill out the application located here in the top right corner of the  page.
  • Please contact the training site in your area and schedule a time to discuss the program with the site manager. Site managers and locations are listed on this site under the Get Training tab. If you need help with introductions, please let the program administrator know and he will be glad to help.
  • If you and the site manager feel this would be a good fit, they will schedule a time for you to job shadow at least 1 full course. While 1 is required, I highly suggest shadowing as many days, as schedules will allow. You get a behind the scenes look at the program to make sure this is right for you. More importantly you gain the background knowledge needed for your certification course which is the next step.
  • Part of the certification course requires a precourse assignment which involves reading through the instructor's manual and taking a test. Having the background knowledge from job shadowing will make this much easier and the manual make a lot more sense. The job shadowing will give you that picture in your mind and better understanding of the terminology in the manual.
Step 3:
Now that you are sure this is something, you want to do, the program administrator or instructor trainer will help to schedule a training class for you to attend. These classes are held regionally, generally once or twice a year. Date, times and locations are annouced during the first part of the calendar year. Once you have filled out the application you are on the email list to receive updates like this and other pertinent information. To get final approval for the course you will need to submit the following:
  • A photo / scan of the front of your driver's license.
  • A copy of your driving record for the last 5 years.
    • For Kentucky residents the KYDOT calls it a clearance letter on their website and is only $3. Click here for the application. When finished once again please send it to the program administrator ASAP.
  • For instructors in a neighboring state please see the appropriate agency in your state for a similar document.
  • If you have had a driver's license in multiple states over the past 5 years, then you must submit a history for each of those states.
  • Once you have all the above information please email a copy of your license and driving history to jay.huber@ky.gov .
WARNING – You will NOT be allowed to register for the instructor course until the driving record is received. It typically takes most state agencies a week or two to process the application and mail the document to you. You can get it quicker by going to a KYTC branch office and they will print one off for you if you are a KY resident. The cutoff for instructor classes is 30 days PRIOR to the date of the class. There are materials to read and study prior to the first class, which must also be mailed to you. You will need about 2 -3 weeks to complete the pre-course work. DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to get this document.
